Unlimited Options: Why too much of a good thing can hurt millennials
As referenced in last weeks post, the use of rhetorical awareness and user centered design are great examples of ways millennials or anyone wishing to create a stunning platform for presenting ideas or information. The ideas in this blog post will closely reflect the ideas of last weeks blog post which centered around those two main points. It is important to remember that when integrating both user centered design and rhetorical awareness into a project the the end goal must always be kept in mind. For millennials this can be a difficult task. Because of the details regarding the user centered design process, and its ability to be used in many different interfaces and forms of technologies millennials who are used to a restrictive set of guidelines can be overwhelmed by the number of options presented. Remember User Centered Design is all about creating an approach that spans the entire process of development. From beginning to end UCD should be implemented in a way that is integrated with all development activities. This can be confusing at times, but remember as millennials we are always able to grow to learn and understand any foreign concepts.
This incredibly vast amount of options can create a problem for some millennials. One way millennials and anyone looking to implement user centered design is to make sure that the following purpose questions are answered:
- Who will be the end users of the product/information?
- What are the end users attempting to ascertain from this information?
- What are the experience levels of the users?
- Will the users be able to complete end functions using the given information?
Answering these crucial questions will be extremely important to understanding the Basics of User Centered Design. In addition to User Centered Design, Rhetorical Awareness can also be an important tool when implemented correctly. Rhetorical awareness at its most basic form is a very simple concept; however, the proper use and implementation of rhetorical awareness into creating an information source can be very difficult. On its most basic level using rhetorical awareness simply means that you are aware of the purpose behind your information, and you are aware of the audience. It also means that you are fully aware and understanding of how well it meets the needs of said audience or fulfills a purpose. One important thing for millennials to learn and understand is how to successfully implement rhetorical awareness in our speech, writing, and reading.
Implementing Rhetorical Awareness into our Daily Lives
By looking at and comprehending the information in the above link, it is easy to see how rhetorical awareness can play a part in our everyday life. There are many steps that we can use throughout our lives to become a more rhetorically aware reader, writer, and creator of rhetorically aware material. Some of these steps include identify rhetorically aware situations and when best to use strategies to help become more rhetorically aware of those around us. For example, developing our “people skills” by recognizing body language and the rhetorical awareness of the situation. For many millennials we see friends and colleagues who have incredible people pleasing skills, or those who constantly have people gravitating towards them. Understanding how and why people are acting in a certain manner, or delivering certain information can help us with the process of becoming more rhetorically aware.
Another way we can Become a more Rhetorically Aware Writer is by making decisions before we begin a message about who the audience will be, what the goal of the message is, and how to create content that the audience will both use and ultimately understand. By identifying key aspects such as these millennials can become better readers, writers, and more consciously aware of their environment both in the workplace and outside in their everyday lives.
